Library series
BIG CLOSE to “Let’s Talk About It! Jewish Literature” Modern Marvels- Jewish Adventure in the Graphic Novel Joanne Sfar’s The Rabbi’s Cat Sunday, May 31st, 2-4 PM
For the final discussion in its series on Jewish graphic novels, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library is pulling out all the stops. Led by Professors David Mesher and Mary Salzman of SJSU, and Eric Benhamou, guest lecturer from JIMENA (Jews Indigenous to the Middle East & North Africa), the discussion will range wide, both about the art work within the graphic novel The Rabbi’s Cat and about Sfar’s and Benhamou’s shared Algerian/Parisian history.
Joann Sfar, of mixed Sephardic and Ashkenazic roots, is one of the most prominent French graphic artists today. Sfar’s work, like Art Spiegelman’s, draws on the tradition of the talking animal, though here, the eponymous rabbi’s cat is a cat, with cat instincts and cat desires, though it’s certainly also an allegorical stand-in for human beings, with its constant philosophical questioning, its burning desire to know, and its jealousy for the rabbi’s daughter. The rabbi engages his pet in a spiraling debate, touching on topics such as spelling, parental love, and the very nature of Jewish identity.
Sfar's delightful, vibrantly illustrated story is set in Algeria and Paris in the 1930s, where the encroaching modern world is rapidly shattering many long-held customs and assumptions. And like his human counterparts, the rabbi's cat has some tough choices to make: "Should I stay in this house of Jews who are so elegant you'd swear they were French, with the beautiful rugs and the smell of fine cooking, or follow my master in the rain"?
Books are available at libraries throughout the region.
The Rabbi’s Cat, is co-sponsored by JIMENA, along with Nextbook/The American Library Association and Friends of the King Library.

Groundbreaking Conflict Transformation Program
Groundbreaking Conflict Transformation Program Launches for Fourth Straight Year
What happens when you put 24 university students in the former Yugoslavia for a summer to learn about resolving ethnic conflict? And what happens when 12 of these students are Palestinians and 12 are Jews? Welcome to the groundbreaking Vision Program!
This ten-month fellowship, affiliated with the University of San Francisco's Center for Global Education, begins with a month-long trip to the Balkans, meeting activists and scholars alike in Serbia, Kosovo, and Bosnia-Herzegovnia. Students study the Balkan wars of the 1990s in an effort to re-examine the seemingly intractable Israeli-Palestinian conflict. During the academic year immediately following the summer students engage in two four-day conferences, aimed to empower them to engage with students on their campus, and organize campus and community presentations, helping them articulate their own activist voices.
The Vision Program's goals are to (a) empower participants to heighten their self-awareness, paying particular attention to their political selves; (b) develop their critical thinking; and (c) examine how such thinking manifests itself in Jewish-Palestinian relations both in the US and the Middle East.
This program is one of two flagship programs of Abraham's Vision, a conflict transformation organization running educational programs for American-based groups of Jews, Muslims, Israelis and Palestinians. Abraham's Vision is affiliated with the University of San Francisco and Vision Program students receive academic course credit through USF's Center for Global Education.
