Enroll in a fascinating and challenging Spring history class
The Crucible of Modern Europe and the Jews, 1600-1950
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:30 to 11:45
Hugh Gillis Hall Rm 217
This course will focus on the history of European Jewry as a lens to explore the broad issues of modern European history including ethnic and national identities, the rise of mass politics, the growth of the nation state and its consolidation of power, the revolution in economic, social and political societal structures and the revolutionary reactions to these forces in the catastrophic years of the 20th century.
We will explore the changing ways in which Jews and non-Jews debated, engaged and reacted to the many challenges posed by these rapid changes during this period.
Beginning with the challenges of the enlightenment and emancipation, we will consider issues such as antisemitism, assimilation, Zionism, religious and communcal reform, Hasidism, Jewish culture, the Holocaust, and the founding of the state of Israel.

The American Hebrew Academy Fellowship
The American Hebrew Academy is the premier Jewish pluralistic college prep boarding school located in Greensboro, NC. We serve students from 28 states and 13 countries. Each year we employ ten or more post-college graduates in our Fellowship program. Fellows gain valuable career advancing skills while working with our students academically, residentially, and Jewishly (formal and informal). For both students and residential staff, the Academy provides an environment that is nurturing to the mind, body, and soul.
The 2012-2013 Fellowship program begins August 2012. Fellow applicants need to have graduated from college in order to participate in this leadership opportunity (current seniors and recent graduates are ideal). In addition to the resume and career building skills that your students will gain from this experience, they will also get free housing (large 2 room apartment), free kosher meals, generous monthly salary ($1,000/month), health benefits, and access to campus amenities including our health center, athletic fields, pluralistic religious opportunities, and more.
The Skype interview process will begin at the end of January.
